This Privacy Policy is derived from the Nurse Practitioner Association of Alberta’s (NPAA) Board-approved Privacy Policy (February 2025).

1. Purpose

The Nurse Practitioner Association of Alberta (NPAA) is committed to protecting the privacy of personal information. This Privacy Policy explains how NPAA collects, uses, stores, and discloses personal information and ensures compliance with applicable privacy legislation, including Alberta’s Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA).

This policy applies to personal information collected, stored, and processed by NPAA, including information related to members, employees, committee members, stakeholders, and individuals who engage with NPAA services or the NPAA website.

2. Collection of Personal Information

NPAA collects personal information through various means, including but not limited to:

• Membership registration: Contact details, professional qualifications, and billing information

• Event registration: Information provided when registering for conferences, workshops, or events

• Communications: Information exchanged through email, phone, or other communication channels

• Website interactions: Information collected through cookies, web forms, and analytics, including visitor behaviour

• Legal or regulatory requirements: Information collected to meet applicable legal or regulatory obligations

3. Use of Personal Information

Personal information is collected and used only for purposes related to NPAA’s operations, including:

• Administering memberships, programs, and services

• Managing events and educational activities

• Communicating with members and stakeholders

• Supporting the NPAA Nurse Practitioner Directory to assist patients in locating and contacting Nurse Practitioners

• Complying with legal and regulatory requirements

Only information necessary to fulfill these purposes is collected and used.

4. Consent and PIPA Compliance

In accordance with Alberta’s Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA), NPAA obtains consent before collecting, using, or disclosing personal information.

Explicit consent is obtained prior to displaying Nurse Practitioner information (such as contact details, professional qualifications, and areas of practice) on the NPAA website or related platforms. This information is displayed solely to facilitate patient access to Nurse Practitioners through the NPAA NP Directory.

5. Disclosure of Personal Information

Personal information is not sold or shared for commercial purposes.

Information may be disclosed only:

• With the individual’s consent

• To service providers involved in administering NPAA programs or services

• To comply with legal or regulatory requirements

Only the minimum necessary information is disclosed.

6. Data Security Measures

NPAA employs appropriate technical and organizational safeguards to protect personal information, including:

• Encryption of sensitive data

• Secure storage systems with restricted access

• Regular monitoring and review of security practices

7. Retention of Personal Information

Personal information is retained only for as long as necessary to fulfill its intended purpose or to comply with legal requirements.

When no longer required, personal information is securely destroyed in accordance with NPAA’s retention and confidentiality standards, including secure deletion of digital records and shredding of physical records.

Individuals have the right to:

Requests must be submitted in writing. NPAA will respond within 30 days.

Individuals may:
